Why a backloading removalist costs less

An interstate truck that carries a load from Sydney to Melbourne has to get back to Sydney. On the return leg it is roughly 40% empty, and someone is still paying for that diesel, that driver and that truck. A dedicated removalist passes the whole round trip on to you, because you booked the whole vehicle.

Backloading sells that empty space instead. Your 26 m³ shares a 25-tonne trailer with other people’s freight heading the same way, and you pay for your cubic metres rather than the vehicle. Nothing about the handling changes — it is the same driver, the same blankets and straps, the same insurance. What changes is that the truck leaves full.

The trade-off is honest and it is about dates, not care. A dedicated truck leaves when you say. A backload leaves when one is running your lane, which is why a ±1 week window earns 10% off. On our daily corridors that flexibility costs you very little; on a weekly lane it is the difference between this Tuesday and next.

A part-load costs proportionally less, which is why the quote asks what you're actually moving rather than how many bedrooms you have. Backloading is typically 20–40% cheaper than a dedicated truck because you aren't paying for the empty return leg.
What is a backloading removalist?
A backloading removalist puts your furniture on a truck that is already making your trip, so you share the space and the cost with other loads. Interstate trucks run roughly 40% empty on the return leg; backloading fills that space. You get the same drivers, the same insurance and the same schedule as a dedicated run, but you only pay for the cubic metres you use.

South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania are not live yet: those routes show as coming soon and you can join the waitlist. We would rather tell you that now than take a booking we can't run.
Are interstate removalists insured?
They should be, but cover varies and it is worth asking before you book. Every Pea Logistics move includes goods-in-transit insurance to $20,000 as standard, with premium cover to $50,000 available as an add-on. We operate as Pea Logistics Pty Ltd, ABN 23 697 906 022.
How far in advance should I book an interstate move?
Two to three weeks is comfortable on our daily corridors like Sydney to Melbourne and Sydney to Brisbane; allow longer over December and January, and around Easter, when interstate demand peaks. Short notice is usually possible on the daily lanes, though a pickup inside a week carries a short-notice fee because it means holding space rather than filling it.
Do you move cars, pianos or pool tables?
Pianos, pool tables and safes are priced as specialty items on the quote form. Grand pianos, spas and vehicles need a human to look at them, so they route to a manual quote rather than an instant price. We move furniture and household goods — we are not a car-carrying service.
What is the cheapest way to move interstate?
Ranked cheapest first: hiring a truck and driving it yourself, then backloading with a removalist, then a container or rail service, then a dedicated removalist who reserves the whole truck for you. DIY is cheapest on paper and costs you the fuel, the tolls, two days and the risk. Backloading is normally the cheapest option where someone else does the driving and your goods stay insured.
